In Which the Author Considers a Gift!

When I turned 40 last February, I made a crucial decision: to forgive myself. I finally accepted that my past - marked by its scars, bruises and broken heart - was a barrier that I kept needing to navigate around.

The daily glance at my "death calendar" serves as a poignant reminder that time is precious, something I cannot squander. Nearly 14 years have passed since I made Canada my home. It feels as though this entire period happened in a blink of an eye, and before long, I'll find myself at 70, pondering how the years have flown by so swiftly and if I truly experienced living.

Master Oogway from "Kung Fu Panda" wisely stated, "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present."

Taking wisdom from an animated character to heart, I decided not dwell on past grievances or fear the future, but instead, try to live with awareness in the present moment.

This doesn't entail a grand, philosophical approach but rather an appreciation for the ordinary, everyday experiences. Being present means genuinely listening to others, cherishing moments with loved ones, enjoying the warmth of the sun, and finding joy in life's simple tasks. It involves acknowledging those around us, recognizing that each person has their unique battles and narratives, and understanding that, in many respects, our journeys are interconnected.

Embracing the present doesn't imply having all the answers or never facing uncertainty. Rather, it is a conscious effort to experience life unencumbered by past regrets or future expectations.
