A couple of weeks ago, I reached out to the legendary matchmover (he has over 100 credits) and my former student, Bandhavit (Mann) Puangpikul
He recently shared his new studio reel with me, and I wanted to take the time to simply congratulate him. It's always a heartwarming thing to see a former student evolve from being an artist to creating a company to serve others.
We ended up talking for over two and a half hours. We are both from South East Asia, and I know the challenges of running a creative business there all too well. Our chat led to my proposal for a partnership.
One of the most dreaded things in any compositing program is matchmove. In the last 13 years alone I have used Boujou, Autodesk Matchmover, Blender, Cinema 4D Matchmove, PFTrack, Mocha, SynthEyes, 3D Equalizer and NukeX.
Tracking is the first major area in which students fail. I've seen so many great-looking shots abandoned by students because they couldn't get their shots to track properly. Honestly, some of these shots are hard, especially for a first-year compositing student. I averaged 20 students a year doing a minimum of 15 shots each, I spent a lot of time giving matchmove notes when I should be giving integration, roto, paint notes.
I made a deal with Mann's studio; Adamvfx Studio, and I sent some files over. This is what he sent me.
A professionally matchmoved scene, with 3D geometry, undistortion, and redistortion data! FYI, I simply asked him to track just the screens!
Seriously, this is a student shot, and they went to town with it.
One of the goals at ACE is to equip my students with the skills to manage projects efficiently, and outsourcing teaches them an important lesson in delegation and resource allocation. While we won't outsource every shot at ACE, it's really a special treat to work with a scene that just.... works.
