There was a time when gaming meant sitting in front of a TV, fully immersed, controller in hand, uninterrupted for hours. That time is long gone.
Life gets busier. Responsibilities pile up. Finding time for a full session in front of a big screen becomes a luxury. And yet, gaming has never stopped being a part of who I am.
That is why the PlayStation Portal became my most valuable piece of tech in 2024.
At first glance, the Portal seems like an unnecessary gadget. It is not a standalone handheld console like the Switch or the Steam Deck. It does not run its own games. It does not do anything other than stream games directly from your PlayStation 5 over Wi-Fi. But that one function completely changed how I play games.
At home, I only have one TV. That means gaming is always competing for screen time. Sometimes the TV is in use, sometimes playing with the volume on risks waking up everyone in the house. My office has several monitors, but I do not always want to sit at a desk after an entire day of work.
This is where the PlayStation Portal fits perfectly. Instead of waiting for the TV to be free, I just grab the Portal, lie back on the sofa, put on my earbuds, and play. Instead of losing momentum in long single-player games, I can chip away at them.
This device is the reason I actually finished multiple games last year.
That is the real value of the Portal. It removes friction from gaming. It makes playing feel as simple as picking up a book and reading a few pages before bed. It allows gaming to fit into my life in a way that modern consoles rarely do anymore.
The hardware itself is excellent. The screen is crisp. The DualSense controller is fully integrated, meaning it does not feel like a compromise, it feels like playing on a PS5. There is very little lag, no degraded experience, just pure access to my game library.
This device will not make sense for everyone. If you already have a dedicated gaming space, if you live alone, if your TV is always available, then you might not need it. But if you are someone who still loves gaming but struggles to carve out time for it, the Portal changes everything.
