Size does Matter!
While I was conducting my weekly one-on-one session with Mike, we discussed something peculiar: Sameness.
What is Sameness, you ask? It's a CG phenomenon that often catches my eye – the striking similarity of objects in a scene. To illustrate this, I'm going to use bananas as an example.
In the real world, every banana is a unique creation of nature – varying in size, curve, and even the number of spots. But in CGI, they often appear as though they've been replicated with a 'copy-paste' command, forming a uniform army of yellow fruit.
Now, I understand the practicality of duplicating objects in CG. Time is a precious commodity, and meticulously modeling every single banana in a bunch could be seen as an unnecessary effort, even with procedural setups. But here's the humorous twist – in our quest for digital 'naturalness,' we often end up with a bunch that seems to be the epitome of banana conformity.
Imagine a world where every banana is identical. Grocery shopping would be simplified, with each bunch predictably the same. Convenient, perhaps, but utterly monotonous. The charm of nature lies in its unpredictability and diversity – qualities that are often missing in these digital creations.
The same principle applies to CGI work. When crafting a scene, adding size variation can dramatically increase the sense of realism. It’s the minor imperfections and inconsistencies that give life to a digital scene. Picture a perfectly rendered kitchen with everything spotless, and then you see them – a bunch of bananas, eerily identical, defying nature's quirks.
