The Set Extension project was designed to simply force my students to extend and not replace the entire background. More often than not, students like to turn this project into a huge matte painting exercise (generally they do not have to experience and grossly underestimate the amount of time its takes to create a convincing matte painting). Thankfully Noah Turnquist didn't. Noah was one of my students during the Pandemic Years. His class had just started in March 2020, and within a month, Canada was in full lockdown.
Despite the challenges of being stuck at home for the majority of the pandemic, Noah completed the program and managed to craft an amazing reel that landed him a practicum at DistilleryVFX (They had just opened in Vancouver and they were hungry for talent)
The task I had given him was to simply change the city's name. Noah rose to the challenge brilliantly and even went so far as to change the city's skyline to match its new name. He created realistic buildings in the background, and he skillfully recreated the signage and its glowing effect entirely in Nuke!
