Alpha 0032
Congratulations to everyone who worked on the visual effects for Dune: Part 2 for your recent Oscar win, in addition to the BAFTA, Critics Choice Award, and 4 wins from the Visual Effects Society. These awards are well-deserved, considering all of the technical challenges overcome and stunning visuals brought to life.
I was fortunate to be working at DNEG when this project was underway, or should I say: “Halfway”? One of my tasks was leading on-boarding and training sessions for the studio’s Nuke pipeline and tools (primarily given to Lighters and Compositors, including some Supervisors with tricky questions). I’m very grateful to the colleagues who let me see their shots and scripts in the office, answering my questions (which helped me better answer tricky questions by new Supervisors later).
The VFX workflow has evolved since the first Dune film in fascinating ways, and catching a glimpse of someone’s environment, lighting, or Compositing work on Dune: Part 2 was always a highlight of my workday. Watching the trailer in the studio theatre with the very people who worked on those shots was truly epic.
All of you deserve the respect and accolades you’ve received! Can’t wait for Part 3!
One of Your Fans,
Andrew
PS: I purchased the awesome Dune: Part 2 swag in hopes that movie fans might mistake me for one of my heroes: Paul Chapman or Adam Bacon, but so far I haven’t had any luck. Maybe it will work better with sunglasses or if I properly iron my shirts? : )
